Finding Fuerteventuras Best Beach

Sweeping mountains rising from the sand

When deciding on a new place to travel to we spend a lot of time researching the location. We want to make sure that it is going to be the right place for us to tell a story from. When travelling we rarely have any downtime, we might be working with a hotel or simply researching new and old locations for this website. We can be left disappointed when we arrive somewhere new and it doesn’t live up to our expectations for many different reasons. We can be very picky when we are looking for new locations to share with you all.

Fuerteventura is as are the rest of the Canary Islands touristy, yet there are still places on these islands that avoid the crowds of tourists and show you why its important to sometimes leave areas untouched. With most of the beautiful and popular beaches on the Canary Islands, resorts are built close to the sea front. The beaches are still nice its just not the same as a virgin beach. A virgin beach is often described as a place that isn’t easy to get to and a place where you can truly connect with nature. There are no resorts, hotels, buildings or facilities on virgin beaches. This is the type of beach we were hunting for when we arrived on the island and we had heard about one that would tick almost every box in our book.

Cofete is a broad beach flanked by the Jandia Mountains the waters are clear and the waves crash against the sand. If we are honest this is not a beach where kids can go for a swim, there are strong currents are the waves can have a heavy break. The road to the beach is also far from easy, a cliff hugging rocky gravel road that is best tackled with a 4x4 will test your driving skills and your nerve. There are no facilities at all on the beach and you will need to bring everything with you for the day. There is however a small sandy parking area.

If you can deal with the challenges of getting to Cofete then we promise you that you will not be disappointed. This beach is spectacular, the sweeping mountains that curve up from the sand glow red and orange against the turquoise water.

We spent the afternoon here till sunset and apart from another couple it was empty, all we had was the sound of the crashing waves and a view that felt movie like. If you are planning a trip to Fuerteventura and if you can pull yourself away from the comfort of the pool, then you will be surprised at how such an incredible place can still be tucked away behind some mountains in the Canary Islands.
