Is Zermatt Worth Visiting?

 IS ZERMATT WORTH IT?

On the border of Italy lies Zermatt, a car free mountain village. Zermatt is incredibly popular for its position to some of Europe's best mountains and hiking. The main draw though is the Matterhorn, one of Europes and the world's most dangerous mountains. Instantly recognisable from its shape and the logo of Toblerone chocolate.

The popularity of Zermatt has grown immensely and the town's streets can now feel very overcrowded. So is it worth the cost to visit? The simple answer is yes! The access to the mountains is fantastic and we have written more about our experiences in Zermatt here.

If you like hiking, skiing, biking or a host of other sports then Zermatt is a perfect place for you. Some of our favourite hikes around the Zermatt area take in the iconic views of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt sits at an elevation of 1,600 meters and is accessible via train. You leave your car at the train station car park in Tasch. The ride is smooth and fun and the excitement of catching a glimpse of the Matterhorn is palpable.

When you arrive in the town your hotel will pick you up with their electric buggy to ferry you and your bags away from the station. We weaved in and out of tiny streets until we reached our hotel with fantastic views of the Matterhorn.

The mountain transport system is expensive but worth at least one trip in our opinion. However, there are still many hikes available from Zermatt that are free and take in breathtaking views.

Take a ride up to the Gornergrat observatory for 360 degree mountain and glacier views. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the highest cable car in Europe. There is also all year round skiing at the top.

The town also has many different types of stores, including a large selection of outdoor shops if you need them. In winter there are outdoor ice rinks to have a little skate around.

Switzerland is not a cheap country to visit and the town of Zermatt is no exception, but the cost to be close to nature and mountains is worth it. To be able to wake up and walk onto your balcony to views of the Matterhorn are priceless!
