SUMMER IN THE FRENCH ALPS
One of our favourite things to do in the summer is to visit the French Alps. It is a totally different place than in winter, rolling hills with wildflowers overlooked by mountain peaks. There is a lot to do and we have put together a little list of places and things we think you should do.
HIKING
Is there a better place than to hike amongst the mountains? There are plenty of hiking trails that suit all fitness levels and difficulties. Walking with such magnificent mountain views around you is a great way to get out into nature.
VIA FERRATA
Originally built as a way for the military to move through the mountains in Europe. Via Ferratas are protected climbing routes with fixed cables, hand and foot holds. If you have the right kit then you can clip in and climb into the mountains. We suggest if you have never done a Via Ferrata before to hire a guide to show you the ropes.
CYCLING
There isn't really a better place to cycle. The home of Le Tour De France, follow the same routes and climbs as the pros. The rewards of making your way to the top of a tough climb and then freewheeling down cannot be beaten. There are plenty of quiet traffic free routes available and anyone of any ability can have a go.
SWIMMING
The mountain lakes are perfect for a late afternoon swim to cool off after a day exploring the mountains. Many swimming lakes even have facilities and you can spend a day out at the lakes. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
SIGHTSEEING
The many beautiful villages and towns in the French Alps are always worth visiting. Two of our favourites are Chamonix and Annecy. They both have their own unique charm and are full of things to do when visiting.
