Top destinations for a coastal adventure this year
While unimpeded travel still is a little while away, some of our favourite destinations around the world have started to open up their borders. Our friends at Planet Travel Holidays specialise in active sports holidays around the globe and we recently chatted to their team to find out where they will be travelling to as soon as they can.
Portugal
Portugal is a great spot for a multi-stop / multi-activity tour with a family. You could travel the coast, spending a few days in Viana do Castelo, Porto, Ofir and Sagres doing stand-up paddle boarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, mountain biking and water skiing. These fantastic spots over remote getaways where top-class hotels combine with stunning scenery without the crowds. The team at Planet Travel work with a few really wonderful hotels in Portugal that have been set up by ex pro sports professionals and offer luxury without compromising on the activity and adventure side of things.
Maldives
The Maldives are one of the most-sought after destinations in the world right now, according to the team at Planet Travel Holidays. This island archipelago fits the picture-perfect image of a tropical escape with white sandy beaches and azure lagoons flanked by lush interiors and sunny skies. The multi-coloured coral reefs here are loved by snorkellers and divers the world over while luxury hotels offer a wealth of activities including surfing, sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing, water-skiing and more. In addition, the Maldives can easily be combined with Sri Lanka for a cultural add on tour.
Egypt
Egypt is one of those truly unique destinations where a cultural tour can be combined with a relaxing getaway to luxury hotels on a stunning coastline. Explore the Nile, the temples, the pyramids and the Valley Of The Kings but also enjoy some of the world’s best scuba diving and snorkelling with wrecks, reefs and marine parks a plenty. In fact, the underwater world here is some of the best in the world with vibrant colours, outstanding visibility and a variety of amazing creatures to see while on top of the water you can learn to windsurf or kitesurf.
Spain
Offering sun, water and heaps of fun, the Spanish coast is definitely calling our name. With an exceptional climate and a varied coastline as well as a number of offshore islands, Spain offers a world of possibilities for adventure junkies and people who believe that the beach is not just for lying on. Every year, the beaches of Spain attract water sports enthusiasts who come to the country to stand up paddle board, sail, surf, windsurf, kayak, kitesurf and snorkel. In addition, participating in one of these adventures doesn’t have to mean roughing it as Spain’s beaches are backed up by excellent hotel and leisure facilities, making for an unforgettable experience.
Mauritius

The island boasts some of the most luxurious hotels in the world at unbeatable prices with loads on offer for couples and families alike. The turquoise lagoons of the island are just begging to be explored whether on top of the water or below it. Mauritius’ consistent winds make it a playground with windsurfers and kitesurfers and one of the best places in the world to learn one of these exciting sports.
