England's answer to Australia's famous 12 Apostles. Bedruthan Steps is an absolute must visit when in Cornwall.
A rockfall in February 2020 has led to the closure of the steps down to the beach and made it very difficult and dangerous to get onto the beach via other ways. National Trust have still not repaired the beach and the gate above the stairs to the beach continue to remain locked.
The views from the cliffs above are still just as spectacular, traditionally the gate from the top has only been open during summer months and we also feel this is the best time to visit. The sunsets over the beach are beautiful, casting long shadows across the golden sand from the individual stacks.
The National Trust has a car park on the cliffs above and it is free for National Trust members to park. While the trust part owns the land the actual beach is still owned by the estate. The fields directly above the beach have been opened as a sort of makeshift campsite which we think is the best in all of Cornwall. There are limited facilities available and even fresh water. The campsite is owned by the estate and the prices to camp or park a motorhome are reasonable. The field is large and there is plenty of space. It is a hill and leveling tools are a must.
The secret to this site though is the small area below the field which can fit a couple of cars and a couple of motorhomes. We managed to get down to this section which includes a very narrow track and park. We were the only vehicle and had the best views of the beach all to ourselves. We really do think that this is the best place to camp in all of Cornwall. We found that with the National Trust owning large sections of coast in Cornwall it became very difficult to camp overlooking incredible beaches. Yet here we have the incredible Bedruthan Steps and a friendly cheap campsite right on top of it, it was just perfect. The campsite is only open during the summer months.
There are beautiful coastal walks along the cliffs that are a must with views of Bedruthan. We loved watching the tide come in and crash into the rocks and within moments the beach was gone.
Bedruthan Steps is not far from Newquay and is easy to get to. For wider vehicles such as our motorhome the roads can be a bit narrow but still perfectly manageable.
Bedruthan Steps was the perfect end to an incredible Cornish adventure. Cornwall is packed full of incredible coves and beaches and Bedruthan certainly makes it into our list of favourites.
